Termite Inspection Dogs
Buy Wise have been using Termite Detection Dogs in conjunction with an experienced Pest Inspector (handler) for over 3 years now during our Pre Purchase Inspections with great success.
Our Termite Dogs have had the same training and by the same people who train narcotics dogs for the airports, security dogs, explosive dogs, search and rescue dogs and even bed bug dogs.
The initial training lasts for about 6 months for the dog once a suitable pup is selected, and ongoing training is performed daily for the rest of termite dogs working life. How this is achieved is by hiding a live termite during an inspection or back at the office in our special training area.
One termite can be all that is needed to pick up the sent of the methane from the termite which is what they are trained to detect, this can be placed under carpet or hidden with small containers to any area of the house, this ensures our dogs are working properly and detecting the odor they have been trained for.
One method we use back at the office is placing a termite in specially made skirting boards that can be removed from the wall and has a hollowed out section at the back where the termite is placed, once the dog passes this area he picks up the sent and will sit for a reward (being food or affection, or both), the dogs are asked to show were they found the sent and then will sniff the area and sit again, the inspector will take the dog away from the area and reward him. During the rest of the inspection the inspector will pass back over the same area to see if the dog indicates again, if so there is no doubt that the presents of termites exists.
Buy Wise is the only Licensed and Registered Pest Inspection Company to use termite detection dogs in Victoria, but they are widely used in other states especially in Queensland and overseas in America where the idea originated from.
The types of dogs used are beagles as they have been proven to have one of the best noses in the business and are very intelligent, also they are a good size dog for performing inspections and are well natured (not aggressive).
During the Timber Pest Inspection the inspector evaluates the conditions of the property and tries to eliminate anything that will compromise the detection of Termites for the dog, for example other animals, pet food, food scraps etc
Once his inspection is complete, he will bring the Termite Detection Dog to all accessible areas internally and if no dogs are on the property will search the garden areas.
If it is found that there are too many distractions in the property to take our dog through, or our dog is denied access from the owner, tenant or agent then we will use the Thermal Imaging Camera or Motion Detector to suspect areas.
All inspections are performed by Licensed and Registered Inspectors with the aid of a Termite Detection Dog or other detection devises, you receive a comprehensive Timber Pest Report and a Termite Detection Dog Report of findings.
Termite dogs have been thoroughly tested at the University of Florida www.nesdca.com/docs/ufresearch.pdf , www.k9td.com/ and have been proven to have an accuracy of around 95% for detection of live termites, compared to a visual inspection from an Inspector which is around 20-30%, combining the two our chances are a lot higher them most other Inspection Companies.
